Modern carpeting comes in a huge variety of colors, styles, and fibers, and can vary widely in price. Here are some important factors to consider before purchasing. If your carpeting will be installed in a high traffic area, synthetic fibers are a good choice. Nylon is probably the most durable synthetic fiber, followed by olefin, and polyester. If your floors receive a lot of direct sunlight, consider an acrylic or olefin which has been treated to resist fading. Olefin fiber is also commonly used in indoor-outdoor carpeting. Wool carpeting is generally very durable and attractive, but will fade slowly in areas of direct sunlight. Your carpets texture, wearability and 'feel' is largely dependant on the pile type. Cut pile carpeting has a dense and smooth feel and appearance. Types of cut pile carpeting include frieze, saxony, and textured. Loop pile carpets are available in level-loop and berber styles. Level loop features tufted carpet loops of equal height. Cut & Loop carpeting combines the two styles. Cut & Loop carpets are offered in a wide array of patterns and textures and are great at hiding stains and soil. Berber refers to large, uncut loops of wool, nylon or olefin fibers of differing heights. Berber is usually quite durable however unlike cut piles, berber carpeting can't be repaired. Color and pattern style are obviously an important consideration when choosing carpeting. Lighter colors can make a space seem larger. Conversely, darker colors and patterns will make a room seem smaller. Light carpet colors will show stains and soil much more than patterns or darker colors. Be sure to choose carpeting with a high quality stain-resistant treatment if you buy a light colored carpet. Choose your carpet color based on how well it will complement your wall color and furnishings. When visiting your carpet store, take some samples home to compare. Keep in mind that the full carpeting installed in your room will appear darker than the small sample you bring home. It doesn't hurt to take a few room pictures and bring them along to the carpet store. If you're unsure about your choice, ask a professional for their color or pattern suggestions.
Finally, don't forget the option of area rugs. A quality area rug is
attractive and portable, so they are a great choice for those with
hardwood flooring or those who are considering moving in the near
future. © 2006 Flooring-Installation.com - All Rights Reserved |
